ART21 Discussion

  1. The artists I picked were Wagenchi Mutu, Gabriel Orozco, Barry Mcgee, Michael Rakowitz, and Rafael Hemmer.

  2. The themes these artists addressed were the environment and humanity, social change, and conflict/adversity.

  3. These artists faced many difficulties in their early art careers. Some are finding what they are good at, struggle with making artwork, and have financial troubles, and stability issues.

  4. The two artists I drew inspiration from are Wagenchi Mutu and Michael Rakowitz because both artists specialize in some form of three-dimensional art. Wagenchi draws her inspiration from photography, and nature whereas Michael uses old packaging from Iraqi food products for his three-dimensional murals. Both of the artist's work intrigues me because the source of their work derives from organic materials. This is especially the case with Wagenchi’s work because she utilizes ripped-up photographic prints in her murals and sculptures.

  5. As a photographer, I am limited to two-dimensional art, like photographic prints or collages. I think I should try to move past that and find new ways to combine photography with 3D art. Or finding new ways to print images into different media. Perhaps I could incorporate other nonphotographic elements into my work, or have my work displayed with video installations.
