Meet Me :D + Sontag

"GRAYY." Portrait Inspired by: Larry Fink

   Some of Larry Finks works

Hola! My name is Crystal Shannel Serrano and I am a Photography major. My top 3 favorite music artist are Harry Styles (duh), John Mayer, and Melanie Martinez. I also really love dogs. My senior project actually consist of a narrative between two doggies I hold near and dear to me. Here's one of the shots from that piece:

By: Crystal Serrano "Bigger Brother Bentley."

As you can probably tell I draw all a lot of inspiration from Larry Fink. I love the focus this style of photography gives to photos by using darks and lights to emphasize features. I especially love it on elderly dogs. Like shown. It also allows you to see more texture... shown on the top of his head and his adorable folds. I'm still trying to figure out what my "niche" is. I know it takes time but its definitely in the works.

Plato's Cave Allegory

There's a group of prisoners, chained up facing a wall, since birth, with no knowledge of the outside world. They're unable to turn their heads while a fire burns behind them casting faint light that creates figures out of the things passing by. These "Figures" pass by and naturally they give the figures names and think they're seeing the object for what they truly are. Until one day one of them gets set free and sees the figures for real and has an aha moment...that the figures are way more than what the shadows were casting and where they actually come from.

He's finally exposed to sunlight and is so excited to tell the men that are back in the cave his discovery and like everyone knows it takes a while to have your eyes adjust back from sunlight to dark and since they've only been in the dark the figures that were once casting on the walls, the one prisoner that escaped, can no longer see the shadows anymore. This confuses him but he's still excited to tell them and when he does the other prisoners are calling him a liar and don't believe him and they refuse violently at any attempts to their freedom.

The point of this whole allegory is to show you the effect of education, knowledge, and reality and the lack of it in our nature. Susan thinks that our present society is still in Plato's cave.

Imagine us being born and have never left the cave:

- As a form entertainment we see these black figures. (In real Life- “Pictures”)

- Give the figures names

We see a ton of photographs a day

- Don’t know the people in them or why were seeing them

- We think we know what we’re seeing/ the truth

- When we are shown anything were being alienated from the truth

- All we’re seeing is an image in front of us and jump to give it meaning

Shocking Points made:

- Terminology Comparing to Guns

-Point, Focus, Shoot, Aiming, and Loading

- Photographing= soft murder

She even goes far enough to use the word rape in the reading but its true with photography you have to make sure your subject is as comfortable as they can be. The only way I can really see the word rape be used in the photography world... are what the paparazzi does... as they literally steal a part of a person for social media and its very intruding.
