Spiraling Selfie
Hello all! My name is Madeline Herrera and I'm a Graphic Design Major. The artist I chose was Junji Ito. I am someone who is very interested in horror as well as anime/manga. I especially like the details that Junji Ito puts into his work to instill fear into the reader. In this selfie I chose to to reference one of his more popular books called "Uzamaki". The main focus of the story is spirals and how it's taking over the world. I took some time with makeup to get the look of the spirals on my right eye. Then with aded filter to look "cartoon like". With the picture in adobe InDesign I added more "spirals", I also made a type of gradient with the the color to give it a somewhat depth feeling.
Susan Sontag Reading Quote
"What is written about a person or an event is frankly an interpretation, as are handmade visual statements, like paintings and drawings. Photographed images do not seem to be statements about the world so much as pieces of it, miniatures of reality that anyone can make or acquire."
I feel like this quote explains the accuracy of a photograph. When something is handmade it comes from our mind, and our mind can intertwine its perspective on something based on what the visual aspect is. It's never truly perfect or accurate, hence why it's considered a handmade visual statement. It's not the essence of what you see in front of you but what you see and what your mind can warp to your desires. The photograph is the reality of what it truly is without the corruption of the mind.
