Susan Sontag Response

“This very insatiability of the photographing eye changes the terms of confinement in the cave, our world. In teaching us a new visual code, photographs alter and enlarge our notions of what is worth looking at and what we have a right to observe.”

This quote stands out to me because of how social media works today. It made me realize that everything, including photos, are an interpretation and not reality. Even what is meant to freeze a real life instance, can be flipped to show what the photographer wants you to see.

“…..Since there were then no professional photographers, there could not be amateurs either, and taking photographs had no clear social use; it was a gratuitous, that is, an artistic activity, though with few pretensions to being an art.”

This quote is really inspiring to me, because even an art that was deemed as useless, and almost irrelevant can still find its place in the world. It reminds me to create for the love of the art, and not for the things that this art may bring.
