Before pursuing an education in the art of Ceramics I explored the world of Architecture and design. As I grew tired of drawing out toilets and bathrooms during an internship I decided that it was not for me. I took a break and worked as a server and bartender in the Food Service Industry. March 2020 hit, and I was laid off and gifted with all the time in the world to do whatever my little heart desired. Back then it was Abstract Painting, seeking a connection to my late father, who was an Abstract Painter himself. I decided to go back to school, not for a BFA in Fine Arts but for a BA in Art Therapy, scared of taking a leap into the world of art. That did not last long, I was required to take a Ceramics class for my Art Therapy degree. The tables have turned once again and I fell in love with the medium of clay and its possibilities, deciding to dive deep into it, also feeling as if the world of Architecture and Art collided into the perfect medium which is Ceramics. I may not have plenty of artistic influences from the world of Ceramics and Pottery yet, but I have certainly been influenced by Architects and Painters; including my father. I tend to incorporate the play of form and function, which derives from my studies of architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright. My use of strong, and bright colors come from the influence of Oswaldo Guayasamin, an Ecuadorian painter. I also like to explore the use of texture and the cubic form, following after my father, who was also influenced by Oswaldo Guayasamin.
Below is a link to a presentation on the artists, architects and people who influence my work. There you will find small bios of the artists and examples of their work.
Thank you,
Calero
