Many of my art influences have been focused on sculptures recently. I’ve been inspired to create conceptual works that occupy space and can be viewed from any direction. This led me to discover many artists in the art world.
For example, Abid Javed, a molecular biologist turned ceramic sculptor was influenced by his passion for science and turned it into art. Javed mentions that his work is combined with Arabic symbols and script from his heritage.
In my research for unique artists, I stumbled upon Tamara Kostianovsky.
Her sculptures confront the viewers with a grotesque nature of violence, offering a context to reflect on the vulnerability of our physical existence. Using various fabrics and textures as flesh and bones in life-size sculptures of animal carcasses, the material connects our bodies with the ones in the work, bringing violent acts into a familiar realm.
Yinka Shonibare, known by many, was my next influence. His intricacy with the use of fabric and color is stunning. Not only should an artist focus on their work, but question to themselves about the application of color they’ll use to complete the work. How can your piece stand out on its own. And that’s what i’ve taken from SHonibare. Each of his works speak for themselves. Not to mention that he also explores complex web of interactions, both economic and racial. Shonibare speaks on inequality in the world- between the colonizer and the colonized.
Then there’s Johnson Tsang who I discovered recently for his use of expression and emotions in his work. Being an artist, it’s all about telling a story and what the audience can capture within the few moments that they have to view your work. This is what Tsang is all about. His work addresses themes such as innocence and the subconscious and explores the perspective of one’s inner child.
My final artist is Federico Uribe.Uribe reflects on Nature’s presence. Many of his works are full circle which gives back to Nature what was taken from her. For example, as trees are turned into books, Federico turns books into trees, leather shoes into animals, while the use of bullets and cartridges to bring a fox or a rabbit back to life might illustrate dramatically the brutal annihilation of wildlife all around our planet.
