Summary of Influences

1. Paula Scher
When I first started studying graphic design, I didn’t understand how valuable type was to a piece. Through learning more about design, I realized how a strong understanding of typography could make or break a piece of work. I’m always trying to use type in way that will help strengthen my design work but I’m glad Paula Scher and other designers have shown me how type can be pushed to another level.

2. Luis Pinto
I’m obsessed with how Luis uses color in his work. I tend to stick to a monochromatic color scheme in a lot of my work and I’ve been trying to break out and experiment with color more. His work inspires me to just have more fun and let myself break free from any restraints that I have placed upon myself.

3. Darelen
I learned about Darelen’s technique back in highschool so I’ve been using it in my photography for a while now, but I really appreciate his philosophy on photography. Aside from editing minor things, I’m someone who doesn’t like to manipulate and exaggerate in my photos. I like to show what I see and also show the things a viewer wouldn’t notice if they don’t look with intention.

4. Marela Zacarias
I learned about Marela's work recently during the 5 Artist Assignment. I looked up more of her work on my own time and started reading more about her. She takes pride in being from Mexico and takes inspiration from the culture in a respectful way. Although I am not a sculpture major, I really enjoy how thoughtful and confidently she speaks about her work. I took inspiration from her style of work for this selfie that I drew.

5. Feminism and Social Justice
Art provides a universal language that gives voice to individuals and communities and is accessible across social boundaries. As a feminist and graphic designer, I believe that it is my job to use design for change. Activism is something that inspires some of my design work.
