5+ ARTIST

 Mildred Roman

1-Who were the 5 +artists you chose videos about?

The five artists I chose were:

Susan Rothenberg

Nick Cave

Joan Jonas

Catherine Opie

Mary Heilmann

2-What were 5+ of the themes the artists addressed about making work?

Themes:

Emotions / emotional moments

Judgement / channeling rage

Studio practice/performance

Work that heals

Gestural vs non Gestural

3-What were 5+ challenges the artists faced in making their work?

Some of the challenges were:

Learning that starting over is part of the process. It’s a natural reaction and hiding that isn’t important.

Moments are beautiful, no need to ask why or how. Channeling how you feel doesn’t have to mirror what you are creating. Anger can be colorful too. Taking gender away from art gives people less room to put it in a box. We will never truly know how an artist works when he is alone. So long as someone is watching or an artist is being recorded it will always be a performance. An artist working in solitude is part of another world. We all need places to have moments, thoughts and feelings. The same painting/photograph can trigger the same emotions you felt 20 years later. The Simpsons can actually be very inspiring.

4-What were 5+ inspirations you drew from the artists?

Learning to walk away from the rules. They’re aren’t any rules.

Stop asking if your work looks good. It doesn’t matter what it looks like, what matters is how it makes you feel after you’ve created it.

Your emotions will never steer you wrong when using them as an impulse to create

Sometimes clashing subjects work better together

5-What were 5+ things you would like to Incorporate into your own work after watching these videos?

I really wanted to add more gestural drawing. I  don’t actually do much of that in my own work. Mainly because I felt if I’m not drawing to my best ability I shouldn’t include it. Which is wrong!

I am pretty good at channeling my anger and sadness into my work, but I want to try to add other emotions too. Like contentment and shyness, or bravery!
